Course Description

This 6 CE workshop is for licensed psychologists, MFT’s, LCSW’s and therapists. It explores new criteria for diagnosis, current views regarding neurobiology and pathophysiology, manifestations in adults, children and adolescents and specific pharmacologic treatment. Also discussed are strategies for treatment-resistant depressions. This workshop covers important strategies for patient lifestyle management, therapeutic approaches, adjunctive non-pharmacologic treatment, and pharmacological approaches, and diagnostic/assessment strategies for psychologists treating patients with bipolar disorder.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, the attendant will be able to:
Summarize diagnostic techniques for bipolar disorder spectrum disorders.
Describe new DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for children and adults with bipolar disorder.
Recognize specific issues that may account for poor response to treatment.
Demonstrate and discuss alternative pharmacologic strategies and thus be better able to effectively collaborate with psychiatrists and primary care physicians.
Describe the practical application of pharmacological approaches to treatment of bipolar disorder.
Identify the ethical and legal limitations of psychologist and medication management and medication education of clients.
