Course Description

This 6-hour workshop is for for licensed psychologists, MFT’s, LCSW’s and therapists and will allow them to develop a solid understanding of neuroplasticity with a focus on how the brain can change across the life span. The course focuses on many practical treatment implications such as non-pharmacologic ways to alter brain functioning and thus reduce symptoms including exercise, sleep enhancement, diet, bright light therapy, chronotherapeutics (stabilizing biological clocks), and meditation. Also explored is the role of neurobiology in psychotherapeutic treatments: cognitive therapy, psychodynamic approaches and character change.

Learning Objectives

Summarize the basic theory of neuroplasticity and how the brain can change, grow, and heal.
Identify the practical application of Neuroanatamy and neuroendoctrin pathways and how they impact affect regulation.
Recognize how early severe trauma and neglect impacts the developing brain, memory systems and encoding of emotional events.
Identify and describe the biological basis for schemas, internalized object relations and character formation.
Identify the practical application of cognitive therapy and psychodynamic approaches for symptom reduction and characterological change in clients.
Compare and explain culturally relevant treatment models from a psychological, and neurobiological that include Buddhist models, Mindfulness and Meditation from neurobiological perspective
