Essentials of Psychological Fitness-for-Duty Evaluations for Peace Officers
Instructor: Sepideh Souris, PsyD

Course Description
This course provides comprehensive training on conducting psychological fitness-for-duty evaluations (FFDEs) of law enforcement personnel. Participants will learn the legal framework, evaluation methodology, psychological testing protocols, ethical standards, and special contexts that distinguish FFDEs from pre-employment screening evaluations.
Program Goals
This program builds upon doctoral-level training in psychological assessment and forensic evaluation by providing specialized knowledge and skills specific to the complex legal, ethical, and clinical considerations involved in evaluating incumbent peace officers whose fitness for duty has been questioned by their employing agencies.
Learning Objectives
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the key legal frameworks that govern fitness-for-duty evaluations for peace officers
- Differentiate between pre-employment psychological evaluations and fitness-for-duty evaluations in terms of purpose, scope, and methodology
- Classify the behavioral triggers that warrant initiation of a fitness-for-duty evaluation using the positive and negative risk framework
- Analyze the intersection of the Americans with Disabilities Act, FMLA, and California Government Code requirements in FFDE practice
- Evaluate the ethical and competency standards required for psychologists conducting fitness-for-duty evaluations
